In 1959, Boston businessman Billy Sullivan Jr. was awarded an AFL franchise called the Boston Patriots, eventually changing its name to New England Patriots in 1971. Although the team had problems in locating a stadium to call home, the Patriots were usually the ones to beat during their AFL days with stars like placekicker Gino Cappelletti and running back Jim Nance.

When the AFL-NFL merger pushed through in 1970, the New England Patriots suffered from a losing season streak, but eventually got to its feet and became serious contenders in 1976, ending the season with an 11-3 record. The New England Patriots won the AFC Eastern Championship in 1978 and reached second place in 1979. In 1985, under head coach Raymond Berry, the Patriots reached the Super Bowl, but lost to the Bears.

From 1959 to 2007, the New England Patriots has a record of 366-349-9. They played in the 1963 AFL Championship game, Super Bowl XX, Super Bowl XXI and Super Bowl XLII, but lost in all. However, the New England Patriots has three Super Bowl titles under their belt – the Super Bowl XXXVI, XXXVIII and XXXIX. They are the only NFL team to win three Super Bowls within 4 years (1993 to 1996).

Last season, the New England Patriots became the first NFL team to win 16  games, but failed to reach Super Bowl XLII after losing against the New York Giants. This season, with the help of head coach Bill Belichick and Tom Brady leading the team, the New England Patriots definitely has what it takes to win the Super Bowl. See the Pats live!
